How often do you buy new running shoes? For me, I wear a pair on running shoes for 3-5 months depending on how they feel and how many miles I have put on them. Nike Converge Triax was my shoe of choice for many years… until I couldn’t find that model anywhere. I tried Nike Air Zoom Pegasus, Nike Air Zoom Vomero, Brooks Glycerin, Brooks Ghost, Brooks Launch, and I'm back to the Nike Vomero 11. Although I have liked this shoe, I have been looking for another shoe that might work well for me. For the past 4+ months, I have been dealing with plantar fasciitis in my left foot. My sister, Missee, has also dealt with plantar fasciitis. She recommended the Asics Gel Nimbus. This is my very first pair of Asics. I’m looking forward to trying them out this weekend! Happy Running! :) Stephanie

I got to do a little speed work on Saturday during my long run. I was so looking forward to running as fast as I wanted after several weeks of speed dictated by heart rate only. In my mind, I was confident that I looked like these other MN runners: Keep in mind that it was 4 degrees so no one saw my abs! In my head, I run like a gazelle. As I was pounding down the road in many layers of clothing, spikes on my shoes clicking away, I'm afraid I might have looked more like this other famous guy: However, I will take comfort in remembering that Bumbles bounce! And also that he was a nice Bumble once Hermie fixed his teeth. Regardless of whether my running style and grace are closer to Carrie Tollefson or the Bumble, I got out there and it was fun. 😉
MN is warming up this week. Three cheers for a January thaw as long as we keep enough snow for my Nordic skiing son! Happy running--Missee I would always choose running outside with a friend, but I do like treadmill running on days when I am running solo. From reading other blogs and articles in running magazines, I understand that not everyone likes treadmill running as much as I do. What do I like about the treadmill?
Stephanie I am a very faithful runner, some might call it compulsive or stubborn, but who needs that kind of negativity. However, the forecast for tomorrow morning calls for negative 20-25 before wind chill. It's time to a sleep-in day til maybe 6:00 am. Perhaps getting older is making me soft; my sister mentioned my birthday and the adorable hat she got me. She was absolutely right that the ponytail slot is at the right spot. Mine is a cute marbled blue and they are on Etsy at www.kookoohats.com.
Now that we have been blogging a couple weeks, we are planning to start featuring some sort of gear either to recommend products we love or save someone else from wasting their money. Running gear is not inexpensive, but some items are completely worth the extra cost if they are super useful, comfortable, durable, etc. We both highly recommend replacing shoes frequently to prevent injuries and will comment over time on which models we like and where to find good deals on them. Keep warm! Missee I took this picture after a run last week. Notice the ice on the eyelashes. I am in my coldest weather gear, which includes my new fleece running hat that I recently ordered online. It has a perfectly placed slot in the back for a ponytail. I loved this hat so much that I ordered another one to give to my sister for her birthday.
In case you can’t tell, I am smiling in this picture. :) My family loves a sugar cookie recipe that I found and adapted to gluten free as our whole family is gluten free. Since it is Epiphany today and the official end of the Christmas season, I made them in running theme. Notice they are all left feet!
MN has been stuck in a deep freeze all week. I was so hoping for single digit temps this morning, but alas, it was -12 again when I got up this morning. Sunday is not a running day for me, but my furry running and walking pal, Charlie, likes to get his "steps" in daily and has not gotten many this week. We are pet rookies and are trying to figure out how to keep his paw free of ice and salt. I'm sure I'd limp around if I had ice balls between my toes, too! The dog boots we bought seem slippery on the bottom, so we will hold off on those until the ice melts a little. In the meantime, we are hoping the forecast for this afternoon is accurate. Twelve degrees will feel balmy. A little sunshine would make it even better🌞🐶
We have been worried about how to stay warm in the super cold temps this week by dressing smart in layers.
Winter running has its ups and downs, highs and lows. Running during or after snow can be amazing! I can’t help but marvel at the beauty of snow on the trees and rooftops. The temperature this morning was a low. Wow… a real feel of 29 below zero! The key for me is to dress in the appropriate layers.
Ice is a major issue for my winter running. As careful as I try to be, those icy spots often take me by surprise. I wear spikes on my shoes, made specifically for winter running. The spikes will stay on my shoes probably until March. Coworkers often ask if I still run outdoors when there is a period of below zero temps...probably because I run before school and they are wondering if I really ran that day. My personal limit is -20F Real Feel, but I'm a little flexible on that. Really cold feels much better for running than single digits with a gusty wind. This year, I am trying a whole new approach to training called heart rate training. It's a 20 week plan to a half marathon in April. Rather than running for distance or pace, all runs are measured in time and heart rate. I am on week 7 and so far I love not being pressured to run fast over snow and ice. Cold weather is definitely hard on pace, too. The verdict is still out on whether the heart rate training is going to make me any faster, but for now, I'm not bothered by the cold or ice's effect on my running. Tomorrow's forecast is for single digits below zero and a Real Feel near -20, but I'm feeling good to go!
