Coworkers often ask if I still run outdoors when there is a period of below zero temps...probably because I run before school and they are wondering if I really ran that day. My personal limit is -20F Real Feel, but I'm a little flexible on that. Really cold feels much better for running than single digits with a gusty wind. This year, I am trying a whole new approach to training called heart rate training. It's a 20 week plan to a half marathon in April. Rather than running for distance or pace, all runs are measured in time and heart rate. I am on week 7 and so far I love not being pressured to run fast over snow and ice. Cold weather is definitely hard on pace, too. The verdict is still out on whether the heart rate training is going to make me any faster, but for now, I'm not bothered by the cold or ice's effect on my running. Tomorrow's forecast is for single digits below zero and a Real Feel near -20, but I'm feeling good to go!
