I love summer fruit! It's so much more fun to choose from berries, melons, peaches and plums than our old faithful apples, oranges and bananas we eat all winter. The only things I do not enjoy about summer fruits are the almost daily trips to the store to restock and the extra time to cut it up. Let's face it, apples are way easier to serve or pack into lunches than watermelon. I still pick melons over apples! Yesterday, I opened Facebook to this fun surprise: Its a mystery why only one store can't have the sale price on pineapple, but I made sure to stop and get one. When i was a new dietitian, I had heard a speaker several times who often said, Men will eat any fruit or vegetables that their wife will cut up for them." I always got a chuckle out of that and recognize the truth but would include children with the husbands. Here is the scene from my kitchen counter last evening: There is some seriously yummy summer fruit in this photo, but I'd be willing to bet no one at my house can find it. I try to be a good mom and want my family to eat well and be healthy, so I "helped" them find this sweet treat: Tomorrow we will cut into something else equally delicious and then probably back to the store to stock up again. We can go through a refrigerator load of summer produce in no time!
Imagine how good this pineapple would taste after a summer run. Watermelon is another favorite post-run snack. It's packed with hydration, vitamins and flavor. A couple times a year, I enjoy eating watermelon off the rind outside and bending over to let the juices hit the ground rather than run down my chin! Our local cross country team goes a step further by holding up the rinds in front of their faces like giant smiles and posing for pictures. So cute and totally wholesome fun! I hope you are all enjoying summer fruit this week whether after a run or all day long. And...if your family can't find the fruits you have hidden on your counter inside the rinds, help them out...summer is way too short and the fun variety will be gone!
